Ranting about Gaming

Gaming

For some context, I wrote this in my journal a while back. By the time this is up, it will have been about a month. Some background: I wrote this after a game I played made a very impulsive and bad decision for the direction of the game (take a guess what game that might be). This resulted in me becoming very upset and deciding that what better way to let out my frustrations than to write them out and get my thoughts together. So here is the rant that I burned into my poor journal.

(I wrote that intro like what I wrote is bad. It's not; it's just me being honest.)

Can we not play games just to play games anymore?

Recent news regarding a certain mobile game came out that has a lot of people in an uproar, and it just got me thinking: can we not play games for enjoyment anymore?

I know there are more underlying issues regarding this one scenario, but I’m not going to get into it as my statement is purely general.

This one in particular has me thinking;  one group of individuals can change the source of a game's development and process, and it does not matter if others could be affected.

This will also expose companies' general favoritism to a specific demographic (i.e., their money makers). If they do not please that demographic, then they have a problem. Not when other demographics have valid or justifiable reasons to complain. This can affect general communities' enjoyment of a game and interactions within the community.

Let's take Rivals for example. There have been two instances where one person/event's actions have affected the general look of the community and the game itself (again, if you know you know).

It’s because of these events that people fixate on it and, in turn, take it out on the community and can affect the general enjoyment of the same solely because of the community.

I’m someone who does not interact with the communities of games that I am tied to, like an outsider looking in this kind of situation, and this is exhausting. Stuff like this deters me from playing a game, and it has, on multiple occasions, and it upsets me that it can do this to me.

I play games for fun, to disconnect. Gaming has always had communities; this is what helped people connect with similar interests. However, recently there is this side of constant negativity and toxic tendencies; it deters a lot of my enjoyment.

Should it? No, but when these communities (or specific individuals within these communities) start to affect the game in negative ways, that's when I get tired.

Does this make sense? Maybe, maybe not. I’m just tired. Tired of communities having so much negativity laced into them and using their voices negatively instead of using them to be constructive. Rather, they will use their voices if something does not pander to them specifically. The sad part about that is it most likely will work.

Companies are too scared to lose their money makers rather than have a loyal player base,

so they focus too much on their negativity because they are scared they will lose money.

Screw the people that want the best for the overall game. Screw communities bonding over general enjoyment or having MEANINGFUL and CONSTRUCTIVE discussions and criticisms for the game in hopes of a better future for the game we love! UGH!!!!!

But that's just me. Thanks for reading,

MD :)
